ST. LOUIS - Vianney Campos scored three goals and the Pacific defense did not allow a shot as the Tigers cruised to a 4-0 victory over Saint Louis in a neutral-site field hockey match in Muncie, Ind., on Friday afternoon. Pacific (5-2) controlled the offense from the beginning of the match, out-shooting the Billikens 29-0 overall and mustering a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. A bright spot for the Billikens (2-2) was the play of keeper Amy Wasserman, who made 11 saves in the contest.
Campos, who ranks among the nation's elite scorers with 11 goals already this season, opened things up in the 19th minute by slipping the ball past Wasserman for the would-be game winner. Just four minutes later, Campos made it 2-0 on a rocket off of a Katy McDonough pass. Pacific took a 2-0 lead into halftime and out-shot the Billikens 15-0 in the first frame.
It was much of the same in the second half as Pacific dominated the offensive pressure and utilized its staunch defense to shut down the Billikens. Melody Demel scored off a rebound in the 43rd minute to give the Tigers a 3-0 advantage. Campos made it 4-0 and notched her second hat trick of the season in the 57th minute when she broke through the Billiken defense and scored one-on-one against Wasserman.
Overall, Campos fired 14 shots, including six of them on goal. McDonough was next for the Tigers with four shots, and Lisa Mul and Jennifer Chaney both had three.
The Billikens return to action on Saturday, facing host Ball State in a match slated for 1 p.m. (CT).
