Muncie, Ind. -
Sarah Lohmann and Molly Boyne tallied for Saint Louis as the Billikens beat Ball State 2-1 in field hockey action in Muncie, Ind., on Sunday. The game winner for Lohmann was her first career tally.
"We had a much better team effort today against Ball State," head coach Marcie Boyer said. "Our passing game was effective and allowed us to be successful. We were determined and focused today and it showed on the field."
Boyne, who led SLU in scoring last season with four goals, put the Billikens on top in the 16th minute with her first tally of the year. The Billikens continued to press forward and tacked onto the margin in the 27th minute of play. Lohmann collected a rebound off a shot and fired the ball into the BSU cage. The strike was her first career goal and gave the Billikens a 2-0 cushion. BSU peppered the SLU goal with six shots in the first period, but freshman goalie Alex LaBarge and the SLU defense held ground and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
In the second half, Ball State pressed forward and Casey Hunsicker finally scored in the 65th minute to cut the Billiken advantage in half. The Cardinals looked for the game-tying goal, but the Billikens would not allow any further damage as SLU improved to 2-4 on the season. LaBarge finished with five saves on the afternoon. The Cardinals fell to 1-5 on the season.
The Billikens are next in action on Friday, Sept. 19, when they travel to Northwestern.
