Aug. 30, 2009

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Senior forward Kelly Waeckerle (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway West) registered a goal and two assists Sunday to lift Saint Louis to its first victory of the season, a 3-0 blanking of Northwestern at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Sophomore midfielder Andrea Barklage (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) netted her first goal of the year in the first half to give the Billikens (1-1-0) all the scoring they would need. Senior midfielder Susan Frederickson (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) tallied her second goal of the young campaign and added an assist.

It took the Billikens little time to score what proved to be the game-winning goal. Frederickson started the play with a cross from the right side of the box to Waeckerle, who found Barklage moving toward the doorstep. Barklage converted the easy tap-in for a 1-0 SLU advantage at the 7:42 mark.

That concluded the scoring for the first half, a period dominated by Saint Louis. The Bills earned an 8-2 edge in total shots, including three by senior forward Julia Bradenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline), and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.

Frederickson padded the lead early in the second half. Running down the middle, she took a cross from senior midfielder Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) from the left and found the right side of the net from 12 feet away, giving the Billikens a 2-0 lead at 55:34. Waeckerle also earned an assist on the play.

Waeckerle finished the scoring a short time later. She received a pass from senior midfielder Kristen Sapienza (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's), who was credited with her first assist of the season, and made a long run down the right side. Waeckerle tucked the ball just inside the left post at 62:39 for a 3-0 SLU cushion.

The Billikens finished with a 12-4 advantage in total shots over the Wildcats (0-3-1). Bradenberg collected a game-high four shots, while Frederickson added three. Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) did not have to make a save as the SLU defense surrendered no shots on goal.

Saint Louis returns to the road next weekend, traveling to Louisville, Ky., for the University of Louisville's Courtyard By Marriott Airport Cardinal Classic. The Billikens take on Cincinnati Friday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. (CT) and face Louisville Sunday at noon (CT).
