Hayes' Late Goal Lifts Bills to Victory

Sept. 13, 2009

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Senior Ashley Hayes (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) scored a goal in the 87th minute Sunday to give Saint Louis a 1-0 win over Air Force at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens (2-4-1) snapped a four-game winless streak in dramatic fashion as Hayes netted her first goal of the season with just 3:23 remaining. She was assisted by junior Ashley Brazill (St. Charles, Mo./Incarnate Word), who started the play with a touch from the right flank, and senior Julia Bradenberg (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline), whose pass found Hayes open from 11 yards out. Hayes drilled a shot that found the left side of the goal, beating Air Force keeper Charity Blanton.

Bradenberg's assist was her second of the season, while Brazill registered her first helper of the year. Hayes and Brazill tied for game-high honors with three shots apiece and sophomore Andrea Barklage (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word) fired two shots for the Billikens, who outshot Air Force (1-5-1) 9-3 in the second half and 13-5 for the game. Saint Louis also earned a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Blanton made five saves, while SLU sophomore keeper Hannah Perry (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) did not face a shot on goal in recording her third shutout of the season.

The Billikens play their final non-conference game of the season Friday, Sept. 18, traveling to Memphis for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
