Elmore defeated Aniko Kiss 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, while Tomalak was a 6-2, 7-6 winner over Ariane Maack at No. 5. Elmore and Tomalak paired to topple Kiss and Maack 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Illinois State (11-4) grabbed a 1-0 lead by winning 8-2 decisions at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles. Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt beat Casey Miller and Sarah Septien at No. 3.
The Redbirds won close contests at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to tilt the match in their favor. Steinhardt edged Miller 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2, and Zubkova outlasted Nalepa 7-5, 4-6, 10-8.
"This match was another great battle, and I'm proud of our players for competing hard until the very end of our third match in three days," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "We won just one of the three, but we believe we have a good team that will be in the mix to challenge for the Atlantic 10 title in a few weeks."
The Billikens (11-7) resume action Wednesday, April 7, at Southern Illinois.
