CARBONDALE, Ill. -
Saint Louis bounced back strongly after losing the doubles point and posted a 5-2 victory over Southern Illinois Wednesday evening.
The Billikens (12-7) were off to a good start in doubles play after Casey Miller and Hailee Elmore and Sarah Septien and Mia Elmore at No. 3.
SLU captured close decisions at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Caitlin McKenna got past Flannery 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 10-3 at No. 6.
Hailee Elmore and Nalepa had an easier time of it. Elmore took care of Delsart 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, and Nalepa thumped Dien 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Emily Whitney collected SIU's only singles point, downing Miller 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
"This was a good team victory in which everyone contributed," head coach Jonathan Zych said. "Our goal was to out-grind them and we did that, especially after losing the doubles point. All our players had the right attitude and commitment today, and that was the difference. Nobody played any loose points.
"We're excited about our last regular-season match against Arkansas State on Friday and the conference tournament in a couple of weeks," Zych said. "The team is peaking at the right time."
The Bills conclude the regular season Friday, April 9, against Arkansas State. First serve at Dwight Davis Tennis Center is 4 p.m.
