Softball Splits on Day Two of Breast Cancer Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Saint Louis softball concluded play at the All-Missouri Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament Saturday with a 5-4, eight-inning victory over Southeast Missouri State.

In the Billikens' first game of the day, No. 13 Missouri registered a 10-0 win in five innings.

Against SEMO (4-8), Alyson Brand drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning. In the bottom half, Hannah Huebbe (6-2) got the final two outs after the tying run had reached third base.

The Bills (11-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second. Lindsay Friedman led off with a single, went to second on Brand's single and scored on Kelsey Biggs' single.

SLU scored twice in the fifth to break a 1-1 deadlock. Kerri Dockins began the rally with a one-out infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third when Jessica Buschjost reached on an error. After Buschjost stole second, two-out walks to Erin Harcar, Laura Bohning and Friedman handed Saint Louis a 3-1 advantage.

The Billikens tacked on a run in the seventh. Buschjost led off with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch.

SEMO plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull even, but Huebbe got the final out with the bases loaded to send the game into extra innings.

Huebbe struck out five while allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks.

In the opener, Missouri's Chelsea Thomas tossed a perfect game and struck out eight. She was supported by a Tiger offense that scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and four in the third.

Starter Kelcie Matesa (3-4) took the loss. Julian Austin struck out four and allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

The Billikens take on three opponents next weekend at Louisville's Red and Black Tournament. SLU faces Louisville and Michigan Saturday, March 10, and plays Illinois State and Louisville the following day.
