KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Saint Louis softball concluded play at the All-Missouri Breast
Cancer Awareness Tournament Saturday with a 5-4, eight-inning victory over
Southeast Missouri State.
In
the Billikens' first game of the day, No. 13 Missouri registered a 10-0 win in
five innings.
Against
SEMO (4-8), Alyson Brand drove in
the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning. In the
bottom half, Hannah Huebbe (6-2) got
the final two outs after the tying run had reached third base.
The
Bills (11-9) took a 1-0 lead in the second. Lindsay Friedman led off with a single, went to second on Brand's
single and scored on Kelsey Biggs'
single.
SLU
scored twice in the fifth to break a 1-1 deadlock. Kerri Dockins began the rally with a one-out infield single,
advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third when Jessica Buschjost reached on an error. After
Buschjost stole second, two-out walks to Erin
Harcar, Laura Bohning and
Friedman handed Saint Louis a 3-1 advantage.
The
Billikens tacked on a run in the seventh. Buschjost led off with an infield
single, stole second, moved to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild
pitch.
SEMO
plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull even, but Huebbe got the
final out with the bases loaded to send the game into extra innings.
Huebbe
struck out five while allowing three earned runs, six hits and two walks.
In
the opener, Missouri's Chelsea Thomas tossed a perfect game and struck out
eight. She was supported by a Tiger offense that scored two runs in the first
inning, four in the second and four in the third.
Starter
Kelcie Matesa (3-4) took the loss. Julian Austin struck out four and
allowed one hit in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
The
Billikens take on three opponents next weekend at Louisville's Red and Black
Tournament. SLU faces Louisville and Michigan Saturday, March 10, and plays
Illinois State and Louisville the following day.
