Box Score OXFORD, Miss. - Junior forward Maddie Gebauer (Cedar Hill, Mo./St.
Joseph's) tallied her first career goal to stake Saint Louis to a 1-0 lead, but
Mississippi registered three unanswered goals and defeated the Billikens 3-1
Friday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore forward Lindsay Elking (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline)
picked up her first career assist on Gebauer's goal, which put the Billikens on
top at the 23:49 mark. Elking sent a cross to Gebauer, who knocked in a shot from
close range.
SLU took the 1-0
advantage to the locker room and remained in front until Maddie Cunningham,
assisted by Sara Coleman and Rafaelle Souza, netted the equalizer at 59:16.
Mandy McCalla (Erin
Emerson) scored the game winner at 81:33, and Souza (unassisted) tacked on an
insurance goal at 86:54.
"The girls played really well in the first
half, but give Ole Miss credit for coming out really strong in the second half,"
head coach Kat Mertz said. "They put
us under a lot of pressure, and we gave up those two late goals.
"But we grew a lot as a team tonight,"
Mertz said. "We certainly have some positive things to take out of this game,
certain players played extremely well. We have to find a way to put 90 minutes
together. The first half was great, we just have to learn how to finish.
"We have some work
to do, but we're prepared to do it. We're looking forward to playing SEMO on
Sunday."
The Billikens take on
Southeast Missouri State Sunday in Cape Girardeau. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
