Logan-Wood Scores Team-Leading Fourth Goal in 1-1 Draw

Box Score

ST. LOUIS – Sophomore forward Livi Logan-Wood answered an early Massachusetts goal with her team-high fourth tally in the 22nd minute, and Saint Louis earned its 10th point in Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 1-1 tie against UMass Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Sunday's contest was designated as SLU's “Kicks Against Breast Cancer” game. The Billikens wore pink jerseys which were auctioned off, with all proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society.

Logan-Wood was assisted by senior forward Jenny Hummert, who collected her first helper of the season. Hummert sent a corner kick into heavy traffic in front of the far post, and Logan-Wood headed the ball into the lower corner of the net at 21:12.

UMass (5-7-2, 1-2-1) dented the scoreboard first at 12:56. Julia Weithofer took a Megan Burke cross from the left side and directed the ball into the top left corner from six yards away. The goal was Weithofer's first of the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hanna Benben registered three saves for the Billikens (4-9-2, 3-1-1), who are off to their best five-game start in conference play since the 2007 team went 4-0-1.

“It was a battle, and we knew it would be,” head coach Katie Shields said. “Sunday is always tough for any team after playing Friday night. UMass is fighting to stay alive in the A-10, and we're fighting to get points.

“I was pleased with the way we responded to giving up the early goal, and I'm really proud of the way we're starting to defend and battle when we're a little bit on our back foot,” Shields said. “Offensively, we created some chances late but were a bit unlucky not to get one to go.

“We're certainly happy overall to get four points in a weekend. Now we just have to continue to control our own destiny.”

The Billikens return to action Saturday, Oct. 19, when they take on A-10 preseason favorite and current league leader Dayton. Game time at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio, is 6 p.m. (CT).
