With Tourney Spot Secured, Billikens Conclude Regular Season at VCU

BILLS TAKE ON RAMS IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE – Saint Louis women's soccer (5-10-2, 4-2-1 A-10) concludes the 2013 regular season Sunday, Nov. 3, against VCU (8-6-3, 3-2-2 A-10) in Richmond, Va. First whistle at SportsBackers Stadium is set for 1:30 p.m. (CT).

BILLIKENS CLINCH A-10 TOURNEY SPOT – Saint Louis has qualified for the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship for the first time since 2009, although the Billikens' seeding and first-round opponent will not be decided until the regular season concludes Sunday afternoon. Dayton (6-1-0, 18 points) has clinched the regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. SLU and defending champion La Salle are tied for second (4-2-1, 13 points), while St. Bonaventure and George Mason are knotted in fourth place (4-3, 12 points). VCU is sixth (3-2-2, 11 points), with Saint Joseph's (3-3-1, 10 points), Richmond (3-3-1, 10 points) and Fordham (3-4-1, 10 points) tied for seventh. George Washington (2-3-2, 8 points), Massachusetts (2-3-2, 8 points), Duquesne (2-4-1, 7 points) and Rhode Island (0-7-0, 0 points) round out the standings. VCU will host the eight-team tournament, which begins with four quarterfinal games Nov. 7, continues with the semifinals Nov. 8 and concludes with the title game Nov. 10. The champion earns the A-10's automatic NCAA Tournament bid.

ABOUT THE BILLIKENS – Sophomore forward Livi Logan-Wood has a team-high five goals and adds an assist for a team-leading 11 points. Senior defender Jessie Jarrett (4G, 1A) and senior midfielder/forward Jenny Hummert (3G, 3A) are tied for second with nine points. Junior defender Maddy Bush (2G) and sophomore midfielder Jamei Borges (1G, 2A) have four points apiece, while senior midfielder Tori Belgeri and freshman forwards Cristina Rodriguez and Kirsten Clemens all have a goal and an assist for three points. Senior forward Maddie Gebauer owns two assists, and freshman midfielder Tori Marshall and junior forward Lindsay Elking have one helper apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Hanna Benben carries a 1.75 goals against average – 1.04 in conference play – and has two shutouts.

LAST TIME OUT Jessie Jarrett, assisted by Jenny Hummert, scored the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute in SLU's 1-0 win over Rhode Island Oct. 27 at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Hanna Benben made three saves and registered her second career shutout.

HEAD COACH KATIE SHIELDS Katie Shields is in her first season as the Billikens' head coach after serving as a SLU assistant coach last year. Shields is joined on the sideline by four newcomers to the staff – assistant coaches Scott Gloden and Vince Gentile, volunteer assistant Anne Gloden and senior graduate manager Maggie Baumann.

SCOUTING VCU – The Rams fell 3-0 to Richmond Friday night, extending their winless streak to three games (0-2-1). Senior forward Courtney Conrad (4G, 5A) and junior forward Maren Johansen (4G, 3A) lead the attack with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore defender/forward Natalie Moik (4G) and senior midfielder Taryn Cressy (3G, 2A) have eight points apiece, and junior forward Alex Gogolin has chipped in three goals. Redshirt sophomore Emma Kruse has played every minute in goal and has a 1.39 goals against average, a .771 save percentage and six shutouts.

THE VCU SERIES – VCU defeated Saint Louis 2-0 Oct. 12, 2012, in the only previous meeting. The game was played in Richmond.
