Late Goal Lifts UT Martin Over Billikens

Box Score ST. LOUIS – Abi Sanvee's goal in the 83rd minute allowed UT Martin to come away with a 1-0 victory over Saint Louis Friday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Sanvee collected a loose ball following a corner kick and delivered a straight-on shot from eight yards away.

Senior midfielder Jenny Hummert fired a game- and career-high four shots on goal for the Billikens (1-7-1), who edged the Skyhawks (2-6-1) 10-9 in total shots. Aoife Lennon led UTM with four shots, including two on frame.

SLU's Hanna Benben made three saves, while UT Martin's Mariah Klenke stopped all seven Saint Louis shots on goal.

“UT Martin made the game difficult for us, especially in the first half,” head coach Katie Shields said. “We weren't able to keep the ball the way we like to. They squeezed us, and we didn't solve it until halftime. But we had some great chances in the first half, and the reality is we have to put the game away when we have those opportunities.

“It's tough to give up the late goal, of course, but it's better to learn this lesson tonight than in the first game of conference play,” Shields said. “Our goal is to make the Atlantic 10 tournament, and that's absolutely attainable. We're disappointed for sure, and we needed to put the game away when we had the chances, but we'll get ready for Iowa State.”

The Billikens host Iowa State Sunday, Sept. 22, in their final non-conference game of the season. First whistle is scheduled for noon.
