Box Score ST. LOUIS - The Billikens scored four goals against Ball State in a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon. It is the most goals the field hockey team has scored since Sept. 30, 2011 (5-1 against Lindenwood). It also is the second-highest goal total in head coach Lauren Bruce's tenure at SLU. Megan Rogers led the attack with two goals on eight shots. Lisa Smith and Faith Mackin added a goal apiece. Saint Louis rises to 1-7 overall.
Saint Louis scored early in the contest when Meredith Jeffers sent a pass across the front of the box. Smith cut through the defense to finish inside in the fourth minute.
Ball State responded with a goal midway through the first half. At the break, the score was tied 1-1.
In the second half, Ball State came out strong, scoring its second goal in the 55th minute to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to play.
After a timeout from coach Bruce, Saint Louis went on the offensive. Three minutes after the second BSU goal, Shannon Knobloch settled the ball off a Caitlin Gibson corner. Knobloch sent the ball over to Rogers, who slammed the equalizer to the back of the net.
With 10 minutes to play, the match was tied at 2-2. SLU earned another corner in the 62nd minute. Again, Knobloch settled and Rogers shot from just inside the circle, giving SLU a 3-2 lead.
Mackin added the insurance goal in the final minute of play, racing down the right sideline. She ran with the ball, untouched, for over 40 yards, and beat the Cardinal goalie for her second goal of the season.
