Box Score ST. LOUIS – Junior defender Maddy Bush scored her first goal of the season as Saint Louis and Evansville battled to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
Bush's goal came on a corner kick at the 8:58 mark, with an assist credited to senior defender Jessie Jarrett. Bush gathered Jarrett's service on one hop and left-footed a midair shot from four yards away that beat Evansville goalkeeper Simone Busby into the left side of the net.
Evansville (3-2-1) tallied the equalizer at 11:32. Stephanie Thompson, assisted by Kayla Smith, scored her team-leading third goal of the season.
Saint Louis (1-4-1) launched a season-high 29 shots – 13 Billikens had at least one shot – and earned a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior midfielder Jenny Hummert led all players with a career-high and team-season-high eight shots. Senior midfielder Tori Belgeri registered a career-high three shots, and freshman forward Kirsten Clemens tied her career best with three shots.
Sophomore Hanna Benben was solid in goal again, making six saves to match her career high. Busby also recorded six saves.
“We came out well and got an early goal from Maddy on an excellent set piece,” head coach Katie Shields said. “We need to continue to improve on our team defending and putting the game away when we have the opportunity. We know what we need to address and continue to build on as we get into training this week in preparation for Iowa.”
The Bills return to action Friday, Sept. 13, at Iowa. Game time is 7 p.m.
