Stipanovich Paces Billikens in Double-Overtime Loss

ST. LOUISSadie Stipanovich led six Saint Louis double-digit scorers with a SLU season-high-tying 17 points, but Mercer came from behind to post an 80-75 double-overtime victory over the Billikens Friday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.

Stipanovich, who was one point shy of tying her career scoring high, was 8-of-14 from the field. She was joined in double figures by Erin Nelson (season-high-tying 13 points), Jamesia Price (13), Desirae Ball (season-high 10), Olivia Jakubicek (10) and Jackie Kemph (10).

Kemph dished out a game- and season-high 10 assists to register her first collegiate double-double, while Denisha Womack hauled in a team-season-high 10 rebounds. Price and Jakubicek recorded seven assists and seven rebounds, respectively.

The Billikens (2-3), who established a season scoring high, placed six players in double figures for the first time since Nov. 13, 2006. It was SLU's first double-overtime game since Jan. 12, 2008, an 84-78 win at Fordham.

Mercer's Precious Bridges, who connected on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc, had 43 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Kahlia Lawrence had 13 points and six rebounds, Alicia Williams tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds, Teanna Robinson pulled down 12 rebounds, and Alex Williams grabbed nine boards for the Bears (4-1).

Mercer built an early 9-4 lead, but following the sixth first-half tie, Saint Louis used a 7-0 run to grab a 34-27 advantage. The Billikens were on top 38-33 at halftime.

Saint Louis opened the second half on a 15-6 run, with Jakubicek scoring the first six points. Stipanovich punctuated the run with a three-point play for a 53-39 Billiken lead at the 13:25 mark.

SLU led 57-43 with 9:56 remaining when Mercer began to close the gap. Bridges, who scored the Bears' last 15 points in regulation, completed the comeback by hitting a 3-pointer with two seconds left that tied the game at 62.

Bridges' jumper with 36 seconds left in the first overtime put Mercer in front 70-69. SLU committed a turnover on its next possession, but Bridges made just one of two free throws with 13 seconds remaining to leave the door open. Kemph's layup with three seconds left sent the game into a second extra session.

A Lawrence jumper and a Bridges 3-pointer gave Mercer a quick five-point edge in the second overtime. Ball answered with a pair of jumpers to trim the lead to a point, 76-75, at the 1:09 mark, and Bridges bumped it back to three with 45 seconds left.

After the teams exchanged turnovers, the Billikens missed twice on potential game-tying 3-pointers. Lawrence sank two free throws with eight seconds left to clinch it for Mercer.

The Billikens play at Tulsa Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 11:30 a.m.
