OXFORD, Miss. – Saint Louis softball won two games in different fashion at Mississippi's Red and Blue Classic Saturday, edging UT Martin 2-1 and blowing out Bowling Green 11-1 in five innings.
The Billikens, who are 4-0 in the tournament with one game remaining – Sunday vs. host Ole Miss at 1:30 p.m. – are now 6-2 on the young season.
SLU took advantage of two UT Martin errors and scored their only runs in the bottom of the fourth. Madeline Brungardt led off with a single, and Mackenzie Peter was hit by a pitch. Brungardt was forced at third on Elizabeth Everingham's ground ball back to the circle.
Kelsey Biggs' fly ball to center was misplayed, allowing Peter to score. When the ball was returned to the infield, an errant throw by the first baseman allowed Everingham to scamper home.
UT Martin scored a one-out run in the seventh and had the potential tying and go-ahead runs at first and second, but Brianna Lore (4-2) induced a ground ball for the final out. Lore also worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Peter doubled and Everingham singled for the Billikens. Lore allowed six hits and three walks and struck out one.
In the Bowling Green game, Laney Kneib (2-0) stranded two Falcon base runners in each of the first two innings to keep the game scoreless. Meanwhile, SLU managed only a single by Brungardt in the first two frames, but the offense flexed its muscle in the third.
With one out, Alex Nickel singled, Lindsay Friedman was hit by a pitch and Brungardt walked ahead of Peter's two-run single. Everingham walked to load the bases again.
Biggs and Ellie Huffman followed with RBI singles to make it 4-0, and Kneib drew a walk to force in another run. Lore's fielder's choice brought home the Billikens' sixth run, and Nickel slammed her first collegiate home run to increase the lead to 9-0.
Saint Louis added single runs in the fourth and fifth. Pinch hitter Katie Kroeger led off the fourth with an infield single, advanced to third on Peter's single and scored on Breanna Lockette's ground ball.
In the fifth, Lore drew a one-out walk, and pinch runner Olivia Roback moved to second on Nickel's single. The runners advanced on a ground ball, and Roback scored on Kroeger's two-out single.
Kneib yielded seven hits and two walks while fanning three.
