Red-Hot Second Half at George Mason Powers Billikens to Historic Win

FAIRFAX, Va.Denisha Womack scored a career- and game-high 20 points, and Saint Louis shot a blistering 61.5 percent in the second half en route to a 65-62 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over George Mason Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center.

Erin Nelson tallied 16 points and Desirae Ball added 15 for the Billikens (9-14, 4-6), who became the first team in Saint Louis women's basketball history to register three consecutive conference road victories. SLU won at Rhode Island and Saint Joseph's in its last two road outings.

The second-half shooting effort gave the Billikens a season-best 50-percent mark (27-of-54) for the game. Included was a 6-of-13 showing (46.2 percent) from beyond the arc. In addition, SLU committed a season-low eight turnovers while notching 17 assists.

Sadie Stipanovich led Saint Louis with seven rebounds, followed by Womack with six. Womack also recorded a career-high-tying and game-high-tying six assists, while Jamesia Price added five assists.

George Mason (6-18, 0-11), in its first season as a member of the Atlantic 10, got 15 points from Taylor Brown, 13 from Talisha Watts and 11 from Janaa Pickard. Pickard had game highs of 11 rebounds and four blocks, Watts had nine boards, and Brown added six rebounds and six assists.

Trailing by three at halftime, the Patriots scored on their first three second-half possessions to forge a 30-30 tie. The Billikens got two Nelson free throws and layups from Womack and Ball to take a 36-32 edge, only to see George Mason pull even again at 36.

Nelson buried a 3-pointer that put SLU in front for good and began a torrid stretch that saw the Billikens score on 13 of 15 possessions. Six different players scored during the flurry, including four who had at least five points. Olivia Jakubicek's 3-pointer punctuated the run and put the Bills in front 65-55 with 3:10 to play.

However, George Mason – which used six 3-pointers in the second half to stay within striking distance – mounted a late rally. A trey by Britanny Jackson, a layup by Watts and two Kyana Jacobs free throws made it a one-possession game with 18 seconds remaining.

The Billikens missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but a Mason 3-point attempt to tie was off the mark.

George Mason led 11-5 before Saint Louis found its offensive stride, scoring on six of nine possessions in a 14-6 run that put the Billikens in front.

Nelson began the surge with a layup, and Womack followed with two free throws. Ball connected on a 3-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions, trimming the Mason lead to 15-14.

Nelson answered a Patriot basket with another layup, and the first of two Womack first-half treys gave the Billikens a 19-17 advantage.

After Mason tied it, Halee Castleman drove the lane for a layup that gave Saint Louis the first-half lead for good. Stipanovich made a layup, and Womack's layup and 3-pointer gave the Bills their largest first-half lead, 28-21. SLU led 28-25 at the break.

Saint Louis hosts St. Bonaventure Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 11:30 a.m. in the Billikens' annual Education Day game.
