Naya Owusu Captures Kansas Relays Title

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis senior Naya Owusu took first in the high jump at the Kansas Relays this weekend in Lawrence, Kan.

Owusu cleared 1.74 meters in the high, just a tad short of her PR and school record, to take home the Kansas Relays title. More than 20 competitors entered the high jump, including several athletes from the Big 12 Conference.

Owusu wasn't the only Billiken to find success at the Kansas Relays. Allison Walter advanced to the finals in the 400 meters and finished seventh with a time of 56.83. Kita Alvares posted the second-fastest 400-meter hurdles time (1:00.93) in the preliminary round and ended up third in the finals with a time of 1:01.41.

The women's 4x400-meter team of Walter, Alvares, Laura Schlueter and Hannah qualified for the finals with prelim time of 3:48.05. The squad ended up sixth in the finals, with Emma Kidd subbing in for Alvares.

On the men's side, Neal Fitzpatrick finished seventh overall in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:47.46. Albert Marban placed ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.11, while Luke Hibbeler was 11th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.34.

The men's distance medley relay of Marban, Tommy Whittaker, Pat Sheil and Henry Arndt finished fourth overall with a time of 10:13.49.

Saint Louis also sent a group of competitors to California to participate in the Mt. Sac Relays and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.

In the Mt. Sac Relays, Isabel Leibfried registered a time of 35:29.14 in the 10K, a new PR. Michael Scolarici turned in a PR of 3:52.88 in the 1,500 meters.

In the women's 5K, Annika Gomell (16:34.24) and Jessica Hoefert (16:43.89) finished fourth and 11th, respectively, in their sections. Both of those times were good for PRs. Margo Richardson, running in a different section, finished with a time of 16:35.69.

At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Hiob Gebisso finished eighth with a time of 14:57.71.

The Billikens return to action next weekend for the Drake Relays.
