Nelson Scores Season-High 18 Points in Loss at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – Erin Nelson scored a season-high 18 points off the bench and Jamesia Price registered a career-high 10 assists, but Saint Louis fell 87-72 to Dayton in Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at UD Arena.

The Billikens (11-11, 4-5 A-10) saw their winning streak halted at three. Dayton (16-4, 7-1) captured a seventh consecutive victory.

Nelson tied her career high and the SLU season high with four 3-pointers (4-of-7), part of the Billikens' season-high-tying 11 triples (11-of-22). She was joined in double figures by Olivia Jakubicek (12 points), Desirae Ball (11 points, four assists) and Denisha Womack (10 points). Sadie Stipanovich and Jackie Kemph added nine and eight points, respectively.

Jakubicek and Stipanovich hauled in six rebounds apiece to pace the Billikens on the boards.

Ally Malott poured in a game-high 30 points for Dayton, which shot 50.8 percent from the field and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the foul line. Andrea Hoover had 14 points and tied Malott for game-high honors with nine rebounds.

Amber Deane and Jodie Cornelie-Sigmundova scored 13 points apiece, while Kelley Austria tossed in 11.

The Billikens led 5-2 on a Kemph 3-pointer and Jakubicek's short jumper, but Dayton pulled out to a 17-7 lead with a 15-2 spurt.

Saint Louis responded with a 10-2 run, sparked by a rare five-point possession. While Nelson was connecting on a 3-pointer, a Dayton foul away from the ball allowed SLU to retain possession. Womack's layup cut the Dayton lead to 17-12.

Jakubicek drilled a trey, and Ball hit a jumper to narrow the gap to 19-17.

Dayton scored the next five points to go on top 24-17, and the Flyers led by eight points on five occasions the rest of the half, the last time 47-39. But Nelson and Womack connected from beyond the arc on consecutive possessions in the final moments of the half, and Saint Louis – which set a season high for first-half points – trailed just 49-45 at the break.

After Stipanovich hit a jumper to open the second stanza, an 8-1 Dayton run gave the Flyers a 57-48 advantage. Stipanovich connected twice from the stripe and Jakubicek hit a layup to make it a 57-52 game.

It was 66-61 after the teams traded 7-2 runs. But Malott scored seven points in a 9-0 flurry that expanded Dayton's lead to 75-61 at the 5:18 mark, and the margin remained in double digits the rest of the way.

Following a midweek bye, the Billikens play at Richmond Saturday, Feb. 7. Tip time is 2:30 p.m. (CT).
