THE BASICS
• Saint Louis concluded play in the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational Saturday afternoon, falling to Cincinnati and UC Santa Barbara. The Billikens are 0-3.
• Maya Taylor was named to the All-Tournament team. Taylor had 39 kills (4.33 per set), registered a .275 attack percentage and added nine digs and two blocks in three matches.
Cincinnati Match
FIRST SET
Saint Louis grabbed an 8-4 lead, but Cincinnati's 5-1 run evened the set 9-9. Nine more ties followed, the final one at 19, before UC closed the set with a 6-1 spurt.
SECOND SET
After the Billikens held small early advantages, the Bearcats used an 11-2 flurry to go on top 18-11. A late 6-1 SLU run narrowed the margin to three before Cincinnati tallied the set-clinching point.
THIRD SET
Saint Louis scored five of six points to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 14-11 lead. Cincinnati chipped away and pulled even at 21, only to see SLU answer with three of the next four points to earn set point at 24-22. The Bearcats surged ahead 25-24 but needed three set-point opportunities to finish the set and the match.
NOTABLE
• Maya Taylor smashed a team-high 20 kills and recorded a .410 attack percentage (20-4-39).
• Lauren Mershon had a match-high four blocks.
• Kennedy Cordia led all players with 16 digs and added 28 assists and a .556 attack percentage (5-0-9).
• Cayce Chaykowsky contributed 11 digs.
UC Santa Barbara Match
FIRST SET
Leading up to a 16-16 deadlock, neither team led by more than two points, and there were 11 ties. UCSB gradually pulled away, however, outscoring SLU 9-4 down the stretch.
SECOND SET
Although the Billikens led only once, 7-6, they trailed just 11-10 as the set neared the midway mark. But a 10-4 run put the Gauchos in command on their way to a 2-0 match lead.
THIRD SET
Saint Louis used a 9-4 spurt to trim UCSB's 15-6 advantage to 19-15. But the Gauchos scored the next three points, and the Billikens drew no closer than five points the rest of the way.
NOTABLE
• Maya Taylor led the Billikens with nine kills.
• Cayce Chaykowsky turned in a team-high 14 digs.
• Margaret Rosburg recorded 14 assists, 11 digs and three blocks.
• Sara Daniels had a match-high four blocks.
