The Saint Louis University Department of Athletics will honor teams from two great eras this season with the recognition of two Spoonball teams (1993-94 and 1994-95) and the Miracle in Memphis (1999-2000) team.
Â
The 1993-94 and 1994-95 teams will be honored at a game still to be determined. This season marks the 25th anniversary of the 1994-95 squad, which posted 23 wins and made a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The teams were led by popular head coachÂ
Charlie Spoonhour and earned the Spoonball nickname as excitement for Billiken basketball spread throughout the city.
Â
The 1999-2000 team will be honored during the Billikens' game on Saturday, Feb. 15, against La Salle at Chaifetz Arena in recognition of the 20-year anniversary of the Miracle in Memphis. The Billikens won the Conference USA Championship as a No. 9 seed at The Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee, knocking off No. 1 Cincinnati along the way.Â
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome back some of our all-time greats and celebrate these exciting chapters in our history," SLU Director of AthleticsÂ
Chris May said. "For the loyal Billiken fans, I'm sure it will spark some exciting memories. We also hope this recognition connects new fans to the glorious history of Billiken basketball. We look forward to honoring these great teams and getting the opportunity to say thank you to all student-athletes and coaches from these eras."
