French Named to 2020 Karl Malone Award Watch List

Award recognizes the NCAA’s top power forward

2/6/2020 12:00:00 PM

Saint Louis junior forward Hasahn French is one of 10 candidates announced today for the 2020 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

The award, sponsored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, goes to the nation's top power forward. The original watch list released earlier this year was trimmed to 10 players. French played his way on to the latest round after not being named to the preseason watch list.

French is averaging a double-double of 12.2 ppg and 11.0 rpg. He leads the Atlantic 10 Conference and is ninth in the NCAA in rebounds per game. French, already SLU's school-record holder for most blocked shots in a career, is 16th in the nation in blocked shots per game (2.7).

French's career numbers are just as astounding. He is one of two active players in NCAA Division I who have totaled 180+ career blocks, 75+ career steals and 150+ career assists. The other, James Dickey of UNC Greensboro, is a senior. French is 12th among active NCAA Division I players in career blocked shots (185), 22nd in double-doubles (25) and 26th in total rebounds (771).

Fans can vote for French once a day in the Starting Five Fan Voting Presented by Dell Technologies. The top five selections in the fan vote will get an additional vote toward making the next round. Malone and the Hall of Fame selection committee will select five finalists in March. The winner of the 2020 Karl Malone Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards Presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles on Friday, April 10.

Previous winners of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award are Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016) and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).
