ST. LOUIS –
Ray Giacoletti, who recently completed his third season on the Saint Louis University men's basketball staff, has announced his retirement from coaching.
Giacoletti was hired by Billiken head coach
Travis Ford as assistant to the head coach prior to the 2019-20 season. He spent the past two campaigns as an assistant coach.
"I've really enjoyed working with Travis and the team at Saint Louis," Giacoletti said. "My three seasons with the Billikens have been some of the best in my coaching career. It's a great way to leave coaching, knowing I'm stepping away from a very good team that should have a great season next year."
"Ray has meant a great deal to me and to our program over the last three years," Ford said. "He's had a major impact on our players and basketball family. We wish Ray and his wife, Kim, all the best in the future. They will always be a big part of the Billikens and Team Blue."
Giacoletti's career included 14 years as a head coach, including stints at Utah and Eastern Washington where he guided teams to the NCAA Tournament. He also served as head coach at North Dakota State and Drake. In addition, Giacoletti served a six-year tenure as an assistant coach at Gonzaga under Mark Few. The Bulldogs went to six straight NCAA Tournaments, won five West Coast Conference titles and posted a 163-41 record during Giacoletti's time in Spokane.
After being named the 2003-04 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year and leading Eastern Washington to the NCAA Tournament, Giacoletti was hired to replace Rick Majerus at Utah in 2004. He led the Utes to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2005 and was a finalist for Naismith Coach of the Year honors.
Giacoletti began his coaching career as a student assistant at Minot State while he completed work on a bachelor's degree. He also was an assistant coach at Oral Roberts, Illinois State and Washington as well as a graduate assistant at Western Illinois.
