Sophomore Missy Werges notched a match-high 13 kills to lead the Billikens to a 15-6, 15-7, 15-5 sweep at UAB on Tuesday night in a Conference USA volleyball match. The Billikens improve to 11-12 overall, 5-6 in C-USA. The Blazers dropped their eighth-straight match and fall to 5-17 overall, 0-10 in the league.
The Billikens had eight kills in the first game but held UAB to a .000 hitting percentage to take a 1-0 lead. UAB actually had more kills in game two than SLU, but the Billikens eased to a 2-0 lead. Saint Louis hit .300 during the third game to close out the match.
Werges led the Billikens with 13 kills on 30 swings and posted a .367 hitting percentage. She added six digs and two service aces. Colleen Hunter added 12 kills, four digs and two blocks. Jessica Moss and Dani Apted tied for match high dig honors with 12 apiece. Shannan Swiney handed out 25 assists for the Bills. For the first time since the Sacramento State match back on Sept. 9, Hunter did not lead the team in kills.
The Billikens return home on Fri., Oct. 27, to host Louisville for a 7 p.m. match.
