St. Louis -
Michigan State scored three goals in just over four minutes to break open a close game and moved on to post a 5-1 victory over Saint Louis in field hockey action at Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre on Thursday. Michigan State improves to 7-5 on the season, while the Billikens fall to 4-8.
Michigan State jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal off a penalty corner. Bridget Cooper received a pass from Jenny Sanders and converted to give MSU a 1-0 which held until intermission. Maureen Halstead tallied with 27:59 remaining to make it 2-0 and MSU scored again three minutes later for a 3-0 margin. Alisa Hebert scored for the Billikens on a breakaway to pull SLU to within 3-1 with 21:10 left in the game. However, Michigan State answered with a goal two minutes later and added an insurance goal for the final 5-1 margin.
"It was a good, hard fought match by both teams," said head coach Shannon West. "Michigan State came into the game hungry because they had lost their last three games and three of their last four were overtime games. Alisa did a nice job in converting the breakaway for a goal and that was great to see."
SLU hosts Lindenwood on Wed., Oct. 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre.
