Billikens Fall 3-1 to top-seed South Florida In C-USA Volleyball Quarterfinals

Charlotte, N.C. - The Saint Louis University volleyball team played valiantly but fell to No. 1 seed South Florida 3-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2000 Healthy Choice Conference USA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday afternoon. Game scores were 10-15, 14-16, 15-10, 9-15. During the match, sophomore Colleen Hunter broke the SLU single-season kills record with 654 kills this season, breaking the previous record of 639 set by Stephanie Feulner in 1995.

With the score tied 2-2 in game one, South Florida reeled off seven-straight points to assume a 9-2 margin. The Billikens countered with a 5-1 run using three kills by Ember Knobeloch and pulled to within two at 10-8. USF's Michelle Collier, C-USA's Player of the Year, closed out a 10-kill game for a 15-10 win.

The Billikens opened game two with a 5-0 run by posting three-straight blocks on the Bulls. But USF closed to 5-3 and tied the game at 6-6. SLU answered with two blocks, two kills and scored six-consecutive points to grab a 12-6 lead. The teams traded points to 14-8 before USF scored six in a row to tie the game at 14-14. A block pushed USF to 15-14 and completed the rally to take the game on a SLU error at 16-14.

The Billikens held a 2-1 advantage to open game three but the Bulls tallied four-straight points to take a 5-2 lead. After a Jessica Moss kill, the Billikens forced three USF hitting errors and surged ahead 6-5. The Bills continued the run with a kills by Jessica Moss solo block for an 8-5 lead. SLU pushed out to an 11-6 lead but the Bulls closed to 11-9. SLU answered with a 3-1 run and a South Florida error gave the Billikens a 15-10 win.

Three consecutive kills by Hunter pushed the Billikens out to an early 6-0 lead. USF cameback with three points but a Bulls' error and a SLU block gave SLU an 8-3 lead. The Bulls answered with eight-straight points and took an 11-8 lead. After the Billikens scored a point for 11-9, South Florida ended the match with four consecutive points.

Colleen Hunter led the Billikens with 18 kills and Ember Knobeloch added 14. Jessica Moss led the Billikens with 10 digs and tied with Hunter for the team lead in blocks with five.

Saint Louis ends the season at 13-18 South Florida wins its 19th-consecutive match and improves its record to 26-4.
