The Chippewas from Central Michigan defeated the Saint Louis University field hockey team today in a road match 3-1. CMU dominated the play outshooting SLU 21-7 and earning 17 penalty corners versus four for the Billikens.
Sophomore Leslie Kearns (Edmond, Okla. / Casady) started her first game of the season making eleven saves in the attempt.
Central Michigan's junior forward Melissa Lazarevski scored her first unassisted goal in the third minute of the match. Within the next two minutes, Saint Louis fought back when freshman midfielder/back Lindsey Lombardo (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) received the ball from junior back/midfielder Heather Mattingly (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Joseph's) and senior forward Keri Brunner (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) finding the back of the net for the Billikens' lone goal. Five minutes later, Lazarevski fired off a shot from teammate sophomore forward Meg Lewis to net the second goal of the game. Half way through the second half, Lazarevski wrapped up the game's scoring with another unassisted goal thus defeating the Billikens 3-1.
The Billikens fall to 2-5 (1-2 NorPac) with CMU standing at 2-1 (0-0 MAC).
Saint Louis will meet Kent State on Sun., Sept. 17, in a Noon match in Kent.
