Billikens Down Local-Rival Southeast Missouri

St. Louis - The Saint Louis University volleyball team defeated local-rival Southeast Missouri 3-2 to begin day two of the Coca-Cola Billiken Invitational. Game scores were 16-14, 15-4, 4-15, 13-15, 15-12. Senior Jessica Moss set a new career high with 25 kills and Colleen Hunter tied her career best with 25 kills, too. The duo combined for almost a third of SLU's kills in the match. In addition, Hunter set a new career high with 19 digs.

The Billikens took game one when Cristal Leonard pounded down a ball for a 16-14 win. Hunter had 13 kills in the first game while SEMO's Krista Haukap answered with 11 kills. The Billikens jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game two and took a 15-4 decision. SEMO regrouped by opening game three with a 6-0 run and matched SLU with a 15-4 game three win. In game four, SEMO led 12-5, but the Bills put on a stirring rally to tie the game at 13-13. But Southeast scored two-straight for a close 15-13 win. In the rally scored fifth, the Billikens held a two-point edge for most of the game but did not wrap things up until Brooke Minniear converted a kill to end the match.

Hunter set career highs with 63 attempts to go along with her 19 digs. Moss had 11 digs to go with her 25 kills and career best 67 attempts. Cristal Leonard had 11 kills and Beth Middendorf registered 17 digs with her 65 assists. Haukap finished with 27 kills and added 11 digs. Lea Beckemeyer had 16 kills and a match-high 22 digs for SEMO.

Saint Louis wins its first match of the season to even its record at 1-1, while Southeast Missouri fell to 1-1.
