The Saint Louis University volleyball team swept a pair of matches in the final day of action at the Coca-Cola Billiken Invitational and took second place behind champion Southwest Missouri. SLU defeated Southeast Missouri 3-2 and rallied to beat Stephen F. Austin 3-1. SMS edged the Bills in the first day of the tournament to finish 3-0 while the Billikens ended the two-day tourney at 2-1.
Against Stephen F. Austin, Colleen Hunter tied her career high in kills for the second-consecutive match with 25 kills as SLU won 8-15, 15-3, 16-14, 15-5. SFA jumped out to an early 5-1 lead and eased to a 15-8 win. In game two, SLU bounced back to take an early 5-0 lead and cruised to a 15-3 win to tie the match. Lady Jack Kristy Rhodes had 16 kills without any errors on 23 attempts through the first two games. Game three was a close affair. The Lady Jacks claimed the early 5-1 lead, but SLU scored five-straight to take a 6-5 margin and moved out to a 9-6 lead. However, SFA rallied again to grab a 10-9 lead. SLU responded with four in a row for a 13-10 lead, but the Lady Jacks tied the game at 13. But Colleen Hunter and Brooke Minniear added kills as the Billikens escaped with a 16-14 decision. The Billikens tallied the first six points of game four and eased to a 15-5 decision.
Hunter's 25 kills were need to off set Stephen F. Austin's Kristy Rhodes' 25 kills. Both players were outstanding as Hunter hit .429 to go along with 14 digs. Rhodes hit a stunning .657 on 35 attempts to accompany seven digs. Minniear added 11 kills and Jessica Moss had 10 for SLU. Jennifer Wilson notched 10 kills for the Lady Jacks.
Saint Louis improved to 2-1 on the season, while Stephen F. Austin fell to 0-3.
