No. 17 Billikens and No. 9 SMS Tie 1-1 in OT

St. Louis - Seventeenth-ranked Saint Louis University and ninth-ranked Southwest Missouri State played to a 1-1 overtime stalemate tonight in a non-conference men's soccer match before 4,537 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken sophomore forward Jack Jewsbury netted the tying goal just 65 seconds after SMS had taken the lead.

The Billikens out-shot the Bears 18-6, had a 9-to-3 advantage in corner kicks and a wide territorial advantage. In a scoreless first half, SMS played cautiously and only looked to counter attack off any Billiken miscue. The Bears looked to attack more in the latter stages of the second half. However, the match was reminiscent of last year's overtime tie between the regional rivals when the Bills out-shot the Bears 15-7, but could only manage a 1-1 tie.

"We had the best of the play throughout the match and created the better scoring opportunities, but give (SMS keeper) Mark Modersohn credit for keeping this one a tie," Billikens head coach Bob Warming said. "I thought we demonstrated that we were the better team tonight, but we didn't get the result."

Modersohn repeatedly denied Billiken freshman Brad Davis, who led all players with six shots, and made his first sensational stop with a diving save to the right post on a 20-yard drive in the ninth minute. It was to be the first of three particularly out-standing saves by the Bears' senior keeper.

The SMS defense also came to Modersohn's defense twice in the first half, too. In the 29th minute, Joe Hammes' header was ticketed for the back of the net but was cleared off the Bears' line. In the 38th minute, Jewsbury bid to put Saint Louis in front from 18 yards, but an SMS defender knocked it aside.

Saint Louis continued to pressure in the second half, and sophomore forward Nick Walls had a chance in the 51st minute, but couldn't get much on a shot from 18 yards that Modersohn stopped. Jewsbury had a pair of splendid chances within a minute's time in the 61st minute, but failed to put either shot on net. Freshman defender Nick Gannon had his chance to be the hero in the 71st minute when he broke in on Modersohn, but the Bears keeper smothered his shot from eight yards.

SMS got the break it was seeking at 78:06 after exerting some pressure with its first two corner kicks in quick succession in the 77th minute. Defender John Duker jumped on an errant Billiken clearing attempt and found midfielder Chris Brunt breaking in on the left side. Brunt drilled an 18-yard drive to the upper right corner out of the reach of Bills keeper Paul Nagy. It was only the Bears' fourth shot of the match.

The goal quieted the Billikens' largest crowd of the season and the second-largest regular-season crowd in Hermann Stadium history. But Jewsbury got the Billikens back even at 79:11. After SMS failed to clear a Billiken corner kick, defender Jason Cole slipped a centering pass to Jewsbury who had an open goal from eight yards. Jewsbury had a chance for the winner in the 87th minute, but couldn't quite get to Cole's cross directly in front of the SMS goal.

Modersohn needed one more good save to preserve the tie, and he again frustrated Davis with a leaping save of the freshman's 20-yard blast to the near post. Modersohn made seven saves on the night, while Nagy stopped three Bears shots.

The Billikens are 3-2-1, while SMS is 5-1-1. Saint Louis continues its three-game homestand by hosting DePaul in the Billikens' Conference USA opener on Wed., Sept. 27.
