Saint Louis University's field hockey team was defeated by the Big East's Friars 2-0 in the final game of a three-week long road series. The game was postponed from Friday evening, Sept. 22, due to inclement weather and rescheduled for Sat. afternoon at 3 p.m. The Billikens fall to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in Northern Pacific conference play.
Providence controlled the first half allowing only one shot from the Billikens while they recorded five shots on goal. Providence's first goal was sent to the net unassisted by freshman midfielder/forward Casey Geary (Norwood, Mass.) with 5:24 remaining in the period.
The Friars dominated the second half taking 12 shots and allowing the Billikens just two. Providence senior back Julie Tanguay (Bow, N.H.) scored the second unassisted goal of the game with 7:57 remaining.
Providence was awarded six penalty corners to the Billikens' four. Senior starter Hillary Wirtz (Minnetka, Ill.) was issued a cautionary green card.
Billiken junior goalkeeper Erin Linehan (State College, Pa. / State College Area) made 12 saves during the match. Senior Friar Heather Tattersall (Bethlehem, N.H.) made three saves in her second shutout of the season.
The Bills will host Southwest Missouri State University on Tue., Sept. 26, in a 2 p.m. Northern Pacific Conference match at the Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre in Fenton, Mo.
