St. Louis, Mo. -
The University of Iowa defeated the Saint Louis University field hockey team 5-0 in a sweltering match at The Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre.
As the heat index neared 130 degrees on the artificial turf, the Hawkeyes dominated the Bills making 16 shots to the Bills' three. The game, normally played with a running clock for two 35 minute halves, was played in quarters to allow for water breaks due to the extreme temperature in the upper 90's.
Head coach Shannon West said, "We came out strong and competed for 20 minutes. Iowa's players made some good plays and scored three goals on us in the first half."
Sophomore back Pam Martin (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) was assisted off the field after taking a hit to the mouth that caused game-ending injuries to her teeth.
West said, "After that, our players lost their focus and were unable to produce any consistency in their plays. The lack of communication between the lines was also a frustration today."
The initial Hawkeye goal was scored by freshman Lindsey Miller (Gap, Pa. / Pequea Valley) with 13:32 left in the first half . With 4:13 left on the clock, freshman Jessica Zosky (Orefield, Pa. / Parkland) found the back of the net followed by freshman Margot McMahon (St. Louis, Mo. / Whitfield) with 2:25 remaining in the half. Freshman Gina Palma earned an assist on McMahon's goal.
Just 1:45 into the second half, Hawkeye junior Gina Carr ( Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley) sent the ball into the goal with senior Natalie Dawson ( Berlin, NJ / Eastern) scoring the game's final goal with 23:54 remaining.
The Bills will next face Appalachian State on Sun., Sept. 3, beginning at
