Sept. 3, 2000
St. Louis, Mo. -
Saint Louis University's field hockey team earned its first win of the 2000 season as well as a Northern Pacific conference victory as junior keeper Erin Linehan (State College, Pa. / State College Area) and the Billikens shutout the Mountaineers. The victory brings the Billikens' record to 1-3 (1-2 NorPac) on the year.
While ASU dominated the first period out shooting the Bills 11-2, senior back Jenny Schwartz (St. Louis, Mo. / Cor Jesu) was able to penetrate the Mountaineer defense on a penalty corner stroke from fellow senior Molly Monahan (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Joseph's) to score the game's first goal with 11:57 remaining in the first half.
Freshman star Lindsay Lombardo (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) scored an unassisted goal, her second of the year, with 14:28 remaining in the second half. As the Billikens continued to wear down the Mountaineers' defense, Schwartz cleared the ball to junior Kristen Burich (Louisville, Ky. / Sacred Heart) for the third goal of the game with 6:43 left to play.
The Bills will play six non-conference opponents during a three-week road swing. Saint Louis returns home for a conference match at 2 p.m. on Tue., Sept. 26, when the Billikens host the Bears of SMS.
