ST. LOUIS -
Saint Louis University women's soccer was offensive-minded from the opening kickoff in a 6-0 victory over DePaul in Conference USA action this afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. No Billiken scored more than once, but junior Jenny Kehl picked up four assists on the afternoon, one shy of the school's single-game record.
Sophomore forward Anny Lucier picked up what turned out to be the game winner in the 15th minute on the Billikens fifth shot of the match. Junior midfielder Mandy Trokey started the play as she had the ball on the left side and fed it across the box around the penalty stripe. Lucier was charging onto the ball as was DePaul keeper Lauren Geiger. Just before the two went down in a violent collision, Lucier was able to push the ball past Geiger. As both players laid on the ground, the ball continued it agonizingly slow progress to the goal before crossing the line just inside the right post.
The Bills' leading scorer Jamie Perry was next up with a goal in the 33rd minute. Freshman back Tressa Pecher hit a deadball out of the Billiken back ahead to Kehl. The junior midfielder let it run into the box on the left side where Geiger was forced to come to the near post and defend. Kehl then flicked the ball over to Perry in the middle of the goal where she put it away from four yards. First-half scoring wrapped up with senior Ismahan Mohsen's first career goal. Junior Megan McNiff played the ball early to Mohsen on the right side. The senior forward/midfielder drove between two defenders before beating Geiger one-on-one with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal.
Saint Louis iced the game early in the second half, pounding home the final three goals in the period's first six minutes. Junior Erin Schwetye picked up her second career goal, her second goal in as many games, in the 47th minute on an impossible angle to the far post. Kehl picked up the assist as she had the ball in the midfield and drove it wide right for Schwetye to run onto it. The midfielder/forward eluded a defender on the wing and bent the ball around Geiger and inside the far post as she stood just a few yards from the endline.
Sophomore midfielder Carrie Carlson also picked up her first career goal as she made a tremendous run in the 50th minute. Kehl had the ball in the middle of the field just outside the box and caught Carlson sprinting in on the right side. Carlson took just a touch to control the pass before drilling a shot into the upper left corner.
Junior midfielder Shannon Myers wrapped up the scoring less than a minute later with her first goal of the season. Trokey brought the ball up the left side and found Kehl just inside the box. Kehl pushed the ball back for Myers at the top of the penalty area. As the pass rolled to her feet, Myers pulled back and unloaded a shot to the left side.
Saint Louis out-shot DePaul 15-2 in the match and did not allow a Blue Demon shot until the match's 75th minute. Goalkeeper Meghann Burke needed just one save to record her second-consecutive shutout and her sixth of the season. With the win, Saint Louis improves to 8-7-1 overall and wraps up the C-USA regular season with a 5-4-1 record.
The Billikens are back in action on Tue., Oct. 30, at Kansas for a 1 p.m. match.
