Perry Delivers OT Win for Women's Soccer

Sept. 3, 2001

Stats

OMAHA, Neb. - Saint Louis University women's soccer team pulled out a gutsy come-from-behind 2-1 overtime victory over Creighton University this afternoon at Tranquility Park. Freshman Jamie Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) delivered the game winner in the 105th minute on a pass from junior Erin Schwetye(St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's). The Billikens outshot the Bluejays 12-10, but forced Creighton keeper Jamie Thompson into eight saves.

The Billikens were the aggressors in the overtime, although the Bluejays had their good opportunities. Deep in Creighton's defensive third, Schwetye took advantage of a misplayed ball out of the back. She found Perry open in the middle and drove the ball to her feet. Perry eluded the defender at the top of the box and put it past Thompson.

After playing a largely defensive first half and trailing 1-0 at the break, Saint Louis was aggressive early in the second period. Junior Katie Zaegel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) got the equalizer in the 51st minute on the Bills' second of seven shots in the half. The goal was unassisted as players scrambled for possession at the top of the box. The ball popped loose to Zaegel on the far side. She took the space ahead of her to almost the penalty mark, forcing Thompson off her line, where she beat her on the left side.

The Billikens were offensive early, but the Bluejays got on the board first. On their only corner of the first half, Creighton's Sara Hovland served the ball into a crowded box where Lulu Quigley headed it past Billiken keeper Meghann Burke from four yards out. The Jays kept the pressure on until the midpoint of the half when the Billiken offense restarted. Schwetye had a shot just clip the crossbar in the 27th minute. Junior Jenny Kehl (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) and sophomore Anny Lucier (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline) each took a shot on goal, but Creighton's keeper, Jamie Thompson, was up to the challenge.

The Billikens continue their four-game road swing next weekend as they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for University' of Virginia's Tournament. Saint Louis takes on Auburn on Fri., Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. and concludes the tournament with a match against West Virginia at noon on Sun., Sept. 9.
