Austin Peay Uses Late Rally For 78-61 Victory

Clarksville, Tenn. - Despite a career-high 24 points from Angie Lewis, the Saint Louis University women's basketball team dropped a 78-61 decision to Austin Peay in its final non-conference game in Clarksville, Tenn. The Lady Govs ended the game on an 18-2 run over the last seven minutes.

The Billikens led until midway into the second half before the Lady Govs rallied. Lewis hit two free throws to give SLU a 52-44 lead with 10 minutes left to play. APSU's leading scorer Brooke Armistead hit a runner in the lane to spark a 9-0 run. Kelly Chavez hit her only basket of the game, a deep 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer as the Lady Govs took a 53-52 lead. APSU led 60-56 before Star Jackson hit a 3-pointer to pull the Billikens to 60-59 with 7:14 left in the game. But Austin Peay took control of the game down the stretch by closing with an 18-2 run.

Saint Louis led in the early going as Angie Lewis scored six consecutive points as the Billikens opened an 8-2 lead. The Lady Govs came back by hitting two 3-pointers and grabbed a 22-19 lead. Amie Van Deurzen hit a long baseline jumper to key a 10-0 SLU run. Lewis converted two lay-ups around a transition basket by Laniya Stevens. Jana Haywood sank a jumper to close out the run as the Bills led 29-22 with 6:10 in the first half. The Billikens maintained the margin until APSU rallied late in the half. SLU held a 36-27 advantage, but the Lady Govs closed the half with a 10-2 run. The Billikens shot 54.5 percent in the first half, their highest shooting percentage in any half this season. However, Austin Peay was even better at 58.6 percent. Lewis and Van Deurzen combined to tally 24 of Saint Louis' 38 first-half points.

Lewis led the Billikens with her career-best 24 points on 11-of-15 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds. Amie Van Deurzen chipped in 16 points. After scoring only six points in the first half, APUS's Armistead tallied 12 in the second half and finished with 18 points. Shatika Hutcherson added 17 points and had a team-high seven rebounds. The Lady Govs shot 61.9 percent in the second half and finished the game at 60 percent (30-of-50).

The Billikens fall to 7-6 while the Lady Govs improve to 7-4. The Billikens host Memphis in their Conference USA opener on Sun., Jan. 6, at Bauman-Eberhardt Center. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
