Tampa, Fla. -
The Saint Louis University volleyball team's five-match winning streak ended in a Conference USA showdown for first place at South Florida. The Bulls posted a 3-1 victory to take over sole possession of first place in C-USA. Game scores were 30-25, 27-30, 30-24, 30-24.
The Billikens did not hit the ball well in game one and hit just .029 in the first game. SLU bounced back in game two, hitting a sizzling .419. The Bills had 17 kills, only five errors on 29 swings. But, the offensive surge did not continue as USF managed just enough offense to stave off a Billiken rally.
Both teams struggled on the offensive end with neither team hitting over .190. The Bulls had 11 more kills but the Billikens had 11 more digs. South Florida served 13 aces and finished with 15.5 team blocks.
Colleen Hunter (Cor Jesu) had a double-double to led the Billikens with 27 kills and 13 digs. The senior hit .455 for the match and added three blocks. Jessica Kmitta added 11 digs while Ashley Hunter chipped in seven kills for the Billikens. Brooke Minniear added seven kills and 10 digs, while Missy Werges contributed five kills and 10 digs. Beth Middendorf handed out 31 assists. Michelle Collier led South Florida with 19 kills and 19 digs as four USF players reached double digits in kills.
"It was an outstanding match," said head coach Colleen Hunter played very well and South Florida never really stopped her. We did a good job slowing down Michelle Collier, but their middle hitters played extremely well."
The Billikens absorb their first C-USA loss and drop to 14-7 overall, 4-1 in C-USA. South Florida won its ninth straight and improved to 19-4 overall, 5-0 in C-USA.
