Colleen Hunter drilled 21 kills to lead the Saint Louis University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Illinois at Bauman-Eberhardt Center on Wednesday. Game scores were 30-17, 30-25, 30-27. The sweep marked the first time in five meetings that the match did not go five sets.
The Billikens got off to a quick start and did not let up in game one. SLU jumped out to a 5-1 lead and cruised to a 1-0 lead. Saint Louis notched 12 kills and hit .407 in the game while forcing the Panthers into 11 errors and a -.088 hitting percentage. Colleen Hunter had 5 five kills, while Ashley Hunter added three kills on four attempts. Brooke Minniear added three kills and was strong on the defensive end with seven digs.
In game two, the Billikens again took a big early lead, but this time Eastern Illinois rallied to make it close down the stretch. The Bills led 21-13, but the Panthers tallied seven straight points to close to 21-20. Colleen Hunter had a kill to start a late SLU run and the Billikens took a 2-0 advantage. Colleen Hunter had a monster game two with 10 kills on 15 attempts and served four aces.
Game three was close for most of the first half of the game. The Billikens slowly pushed out to a 28-20 margin, but Eastern Illinois closed the gap to 28-24. The teams traded points and the match ended on a Colleen Hunter kill. Hunter finished with 21 kills and hit .459 for the match. She added nine digs, five blocks and five service aces. Ashley Hunter, Minniear and Ember Knobeloch all added seven kills, and Minniear recorded a match-high 16 digs. Setter Beth Middendorf handed out 23 assists and Lauren Boissevain added a career-high 14 assists in the setting effort. Erica Gerth paced Eastern Illinois with 11 kills, while Shanna Ruzer chipped in eight. Sarah Niedospial lead EIU with nine digs. The Billikens hit .340 for the match while EIU managed just a .098. The Billikens had 10 more kills and enjoyed a huge blocking advantage, 11.0 to 3.0.
The Billikens win their second straight and improve to 11-6 on the season while the Panthers fall to 6-11.
