The Colorado Buffaloes dealt the Billikens their first loss of the season 3-0 in the opening match of the LMU Volleyball Classic in Los Angeles, Calif. Game scores were 30-18, 30-26 and 30-23. The Buffaloes, who were ranked 21st in the preseason poll, started their campaign with losses against three of the top 11 teams in the nation.
CU was outstanding and hit .352 against the top defensive team in Conference USA. SLU opponents were hitting just .108, but the Buffaloes hit .343 in game one and an unreal .441 in game two. The Bills improved their hitting percentage as the match went on, but hit a season-low .144 for the contest.
The Billikens were led by Colleen Hunter who finished with 12 kills, four digs and hit .500 for the match. Brooke Minniear added nine kills and a team-high six digs. Beth Middendorf added 25 assists. SLU, the top blocking team in C-USA, managed just a solo block by Hunter. Meghan Barkman led Colorado with 15 kills, while Nicole Carr added 11 kills and 11 digs.
The Billikens suffered their first loss of the season and dip to 4-1, while Colorado improves to 1-3. The Bills face host Loyola Marymount and Notre Dame on Saturday.
