A pair of school records fell as Saint Louis University swimming and diving took both halves of a dual meet with Western Illinois this afternoon at Simon Recreation Center. The Billiken women won going away146-96, while the men needed the meets final event to top the Leathernecks 60-53. Missouri-Rolla's men topped both Western Illinois and SLU, 72-39 and 67-44 respectively. Sophomore Megan Capellupo (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) and freshman John Stoneburner each broke the school records in the 200 breast.
The Billiken women got in front early and ever looked back, taking first in each of the first six events of the day. Four individuals took a pair of firsts in the meet. Senior diver Kristi Cottral swept the diving events in the last home meet of her career. Capellupo took first in both of her events, the 200 IM (2:11.29) and 200 breast (2:23.23). Freshmen Alice Altepeter (St. Louis, Mo./Marquette) and Maggie Norton also twook two firsts as the Bills cruised to victory.
For the men, WIU took the early lead, but could not get control of the meet. Stoneburner's first in the 200 IM closed the margin to three points, which divers Bobby Wolf(St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) eliminated with a first on the one-meter board. Ev ery time the Leathernecks inched forward, the Billikens responded, including Stoneburner's school-rrecord time of 2:10.52 in the 200 breast. His victory, coupled with Steve Webb's edging of WIU's Dennis Norton for third in the event tied the meet going into the final event. SLU's 400 free relay team of Chris Clement, Christopher Johansen, Neil Senkowski and Rich Sheridan closed out the meet with a first that delivered the victory for SLU.
The women improved to 11-0 with the win, while the men's team sits at 8-2 after splitting the double dual. The Billikens are back in action next Sat., Jan. 25, at Bowling Green.
