Final Stats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Saint Louis University women's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Charlotte this afternoon at Transamerica Field. The Billikens out-shot the 49ers 9-7, but could not stop Lindsay Duncan who assisted on the first goal then netted the game winner in the 57th minute. With the loss, the Billikens fall to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Conference USA, while Charlotte improves to 3-10-1 and 2-3-1 in the league.

The 49ers controlled the ball for much of the first half, but the Billiken defense still yielded only four shots in the period. SLU finally got its offense moving forward midway through the half. Jamie Perry had the Bills' best chance in the 20th minute. Dee Guempel had the ball wide on the left and sent a pass to Christie Cigno at the top of the box, who touched it ahead to Perry. The junior forward wrong-footed Charlotte keeper Shannon Hoffman, but defender Jill Leeder was there to make the save.

Despite yielding control of the midfield, the 49ers were first on the board in the 40th minute. Off a deadball, Lindsay Duncan sent Megan Terliip to the left corner. SLU defender Carrie Carlson shut down the play, but Terlip found Kim Miles at the top left corner of the box. Settling the ball, Miles was able to lift an 18-yard arc and tuck it just under the crossbar.

SLU tied it up in the 51st minute on a goal from Cigno. Perry got the play going with a through ball that Maureen Hughes battled a Charlotte defender, during which Hoffman came off her line. When the ball poked out from Hughes, Cigno ran onto it just inside the box and beat Hoffman to the lower right.

The 49ers regained the lead six minutes later on a defensive miscue from the Billikens. As SLU bumped the ball around the back, Martin's clearance found Duncan 25 yards out. Duncan took a few touches to her left and sent a shot skidding across into the left side of the goal.

SLU's best bid to tie came in the 80th minute when Ferguson collected a deflection and sent a 25-yard bomb that Hoffman had to leap up to save.

The Billikens return home for a pair of games next week beginning with a 7 p.m. match up with Louisville on Fri., Oct. 17, at Robert R. Hermann stadium.
