Final Stats
St. Louis -
Saint Louis blanked DePaul 1-0 this afternoon in the final regular-season Conference USA women's soccer match for both clubs at rain swept Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken junior forward Jamie Perry netted the winner and became the Billikens' all-time leading scorer with 79 career points.
Perry put the Bills on top at 79:10 on a break-in. Billiken freshman midfielder Courtney Hulcer won a free ball near the center stripe and gave it to freshman forward Dee Guempel, who sent it ahead to Perry. The St. Louis native fought off a DePaul defender and wheeled around to take on Demons keeper Lindsey Deason. Perry rolled it past Deason just inside the right post.
In a scoreless first half, the Billikens out-shot the Blue Demons 5-4 and had a 4-3 edge in corners. With the conditions hampering the sharpness of play, neither side was able to muster a truly dangerous scoring attempt.
Billiken sophomore midfielder Christie Cigno had the best opportunity in the opening moments of the second half. After receiving a cross from Lachlyne Eastman at the left side of the DePaul area, Cigno tested Deason with a 10-yard shot. The DePaul keeper handled it routinely at the near post.
DePaul's first good chance came in the 63rd minute as sophomore midfielder Erin Walter sent a low, 22-yard drive to the left post. SLU keeper Amanda Martin made the save of the match by diving to deflect it wide. Martin again had to be sharp in the 68th minute as the Demons found freshman midfielder Lauren Spacht running free down the left flank. Martin came out to challenge Spacht's 15-yard shot and handled it easily.
The Billkens out-shot the Blue Demons 12-7 despite losing sweeper Anny Lucier to an injury early in the game. Junior back Tressa Pecher moved back to sweeper and organized a defensive unit that held C-USA's leading scorer, Julianne Sitch, without a shot in the match. Each keeper made three saves.
Saint Louis concluded the regular-season with a 12-5-2 overall record and a 6-3-1 C-USA mark. The Billikens play USF in the C-USA Tournament first round, which begins on Wednesday in Charlotte.
