Saint Louis Shuts Out Appalachian State in NorPac Match

Oct. 17, 2004

Final Stats

St. Louis, Mo. - In a 1 p.m. NorPac Conference field hockey match at the Anheuser-Busch Center, Saint Louis shut out Appalachian State 3-0 and improve to 4-6, 2-0 on the year. Freshman Catherine Donovan, senior Ellen Rapp and junior Carin Boone each scored while junior keeper Julie Moeckel earned the shut out this afternoon.

Walk-on rookie Donovan began the scoring drive at the 25-minute mark of the first half from a quick Rapp assist to wrap up an offensive drive that began in ASU's backfield. Donovan's goal marks her third of the season off just four shots (.750). The Billikens held the lead to half-time taking four shots to the Mountaineers three, and earned four penalty corners over ASU's three.

Moeckel made two saves with Kate Rino making one Mountaineer save in the half.

SLU maintained control of the field with solid direction from freshman Ashlea Hibshman, Marissa Lynn and Jill Mueller. Aiding Moeckel in goal, the Billiken backfield remained stingy throughout the match with steady performances from junior Stephanie Bus, sophmore Michelle Sinclair and freshman Rita Murphy.

Second-half goals were scored by Rapp, assisted by Boone, with 29 minutes to go in the match. Boone had a golden opportunity handed to her when ASU misfired a pass that Boone intercepted. She made a solo drive from midfield through several Mountaineer defenders striking the ball between the pipes to lock up the 3-0 shut out at the six-minute mark.

This was the final match of the two-game series with ASU this weekend. SLU won 4-2 yesterday earning its first NorPac win of the year. Saint Louis improved to 4-6 overall and remain undefeated (2-0) in league play wrapping up the regular home season. SLU has four upcoming road games with NorPac foes Davidson (2) and Radford (2). The Billikens close out the season in Bloomington, Ind. Halloween weekend with non-conference matches against two Big 10 schools, Ohio State and Indiana.

Prior to today's match, Lynn and Rapp were honored in Senior Day festivities. To date, Rapp has 32 four-year career points (12G, 8A) and Lynn has 15 two-year career points (3G, 15A).
