Fenton, Mo. - Temple University scored with 4:11 remaining in the match to vault Temple past Saint Louis 1-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference field hockey action this afternoon at the Anheuser-Busch Center.
The two teams traded chances in the first half, but the game remained scoreless thanks in large part to a solid defensive effort by the Bills. Saint Louis (5-9 overall, 1-2 A-10) turned away nine Temple (8-8, 3-0 A-10) penalty corners in the half, including five in a span of two minutes.
It was Temple's defense that shined in the second half, allowing only one Billiken shot. The game remained scoreless until Jennifer Adamek netted the game winner on a feed from Lindsay Holman in the 65th minute.
Temple held a 10-4 advantage on penalty corners and outshot the Billikens 13-5. SLU keeper Amy Wasserman turned away 10 shots on the afternoon. Temple's Erin Hanshue was credited with the shutout in goal after turning aside two Billiken chances.
Saint Louis will be back in action this Sunday when A-10 opponent Saint Joseph's comes to town. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Anheuser-Busch Center.
