Final Stats
Fenton, Mo. -
Massachusetts scored a frantic final goal with six-tenths of a second left in the game to edge Saint Louis 3-2 in an Atlantic 10 Conference game on Sunday afternoon at the A-B Center. Katelyn Orlando scored on a deflection off a long shot by Jamie Bawden as the Minutewomen scored their first A-10 win.
UMass carried the play in the early going, but the Billikens struck first. Courtney Gasparovic settled a pass from Carin Boone and launched a low shot past UMass keeper Becky Letourneau for a 1-0 Billiken lead at the 28:15 mark. Just over three minutes later, UMass equalized on a Lauren Gillespie goal.
After intermission, Erin O'Brien scored on a penalty shot to give the Minutewomen a 2-1 lead two and a half minutes into the second half. Kristin Lueders tallied an unassisted goal at the 45:06 mark after a goal-mouth scramble to knot the game 2-2. However, that set the stage for UMass' dramatic late goal. The Minutewomen pushed up the field on the left side, and Bawden put a shot on goal. The ball caromed off of Orlando and rolled into the goal. Billiken goalie Amy Wasserman was strong in the net making eight saves, including five in the second half.
The loss drops the Billikens to 5-8 overall, 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Minutewomen improve to 4-9 overall, 1-1 in the league.
