Final Stats
Saint Louis opened the 2005 field hockey season in exciting fashion, as Kristin Lueders netted a penalty corner at 80:57 for the 2-1 overtime victory over Southwest Missouri State, at the Anheuser Busch Center.
The Bills (1-0) earned their eighth penalty corner of the game at 80:35. Junior Michelle Sinclair inserted the ball to senior Jamie Smeland, who set the ball for Lueders game winning shot.
Freshman Mary Henry started the scoring 5:22 into the contest. She netted her first collegiate goal, by converting a cross from senior Carin Boone. The Billikens took that 1-0 lead into the intermission.
SMS (0-1) broke through in the second half, as JoAnn Westman scored at 55:57. Stephani Wehrman fed the ball through a group of players, and Westman tipped the ball into the net.
Mary Wasserman made her first collegiate start in goal for the Billikens, and earned the win. She recorded 10 saves, four in the overtime period. Her SMS counterpart, Jessica Schuster, also made 10 saves, in playing the entire 80:57.
Both teams attempted 18 shots and earned eight penalty corners.
St. Louis returns to action on Friday, September 2, hosting Central Michigan at 2:00 p.m.
