The Saint Louis field hockey team saw its upset bid of host Michigan State fall short, 2-1, in overtime, this afternoon in East Lansing, Mich.
The Billikens (2-2) made the most of their lone recorded shot of the day. Trailing 1-0 in the 43rd minute of play, Kristin Lueders netted a pass from Ashlea Hibshman, to force overtime. Michigan State (6-1), which scored at 15:11 of the first half, converted their 27th shot of the contest, 2:28 into the overtime period to earn the win.
Amy Wasserman kept the Billikens in the game in net. She recorded 14 saves, six in each half and two in the overtime period. Her MSU counterpart, Christina Kirkaldy, did not record a save.
Michigan State, a member of the Big 10 Conference, finished the 2004 campaign ranked 8th in the nation. The Spartans advanced all the way to the final four of the NCAA Tournament, after having been ranked #1 in polls during the season. The first poll of 2005 is scheduled to come out in mid-September.
The Billikens will take on James Madison on Sunday, in East Lansing. That game is scheduled for noon. JMU lost 3-2 to the Spartans on Friday afternoon.
