St. Louis -
Saint Louis remained unbeaten in its inaugural Atlantic 10 Conference campaign as the Billikens knocked off Charlotte 2-1 tonight in a women's soccer match before 1,544 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken senior midfielder Kelly Ferguson netted the winner.
Saint Louis thoroughly dominated the opening half and found the back of the net in the 28th minute. Just inside the 49ers' penalty area, SLU sophomore forward Cassi Winchell settled a pass from Billiken All-America candidate Courtney Hulcer, turned and sent a sinking 16-yard drive off the underside of the cross bar beyond the reach of Charlotte keeper Juli Black.
Billiken senior midfielder Kelly Ferguson drilled a 20-yard free kick in the 63rd minute to give SLU a two-goal margin. Junior forward Maureen Hughes drew the foul that set up the scoring opportunity. Ferguson nearly notched her second goal of the night with a header off the cross bar in the 70th minute.
The 49ers finally broke through in the 86th minute as Charlotte capitalized on a free kick. Charlotte midfielder Lindsey Beam's serve found a mass of players in front of the SLU goal where Kelsie Ormsby knocked it home from six yards.
The Billikens out-shot Charlotte (4-6-0 overall, 0-1-0 A-10) 20-7 and had a 5-1 edge on corner kicks. SLU keeper Amanda Martin recorded three saves to post the victory. Charlotte's Black made 12 stops.
Saint Louis (7-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 A-10) returns to Hermann Stadium on Sunday to face Richmond in a 1 p.m. kick-off.
