ST. LOUIS -
#17 Dayton out-hit Saint Louis in three of the four games en route to a 30-20, 30-27, 24-30, 30-25 Atlantic 10 Conference victory on Sunday afternoon at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center. With its first home loss of the season and its first loss in the last nine matches, the Billikens fall to 18-6, 7-3 A-10 while the Flyers improve to 23-1, 10-1 A-10.
"It's tough to play back-to-back matches against the top two teams in the league," SLU head coach Anne Kordes said. "Our team played hard but Dayton forced us into a lot of mistakes. I'm disappointed with the outcome but I am excited about the fact that the A-10 has gotten so competitive. It's going to be really exciting if all three of us (Xavier, SLU and Dayton) make it to the (A-10) tournament."
UD held a slim advantage from the start of game one until SLU pulled even at 9-9 courtesy of kills from Bridget Fonke and Sutton Lasater. A SLU blocking error and attack error allowed the Flyers to regain the lead but it wasn't for long as the Bills again knotted the score at 14-14 before pulling ahead on a Fonke kill. Dayton, which hit .236, rallied with a 7-2 run and never looked back en route to the 30-20 victory. Lasater, Fonke and Sammi McCloud each had three kills for SLU, which recorded 11 hitting errors.
SLU fell behind early in the second game as the Flyers went on a five-point run to lead 6-2. The Billikens tied things up at 8-8 on kills from Lasater and Whitney Roth and a Chrissy King ace gave SLU the lead. The Bills maintained a two to three point advantage until Dayton pulled even at 26-26. SLU's Sally Warning added a kill for the lead but Lindsay Fletemier helped UD tie it at 27-27 and an Adrienne Green service ace put the Flyers up by one. Dayton closed out the match with points off another service ace and a Billiken hitting error for the win.
The Bills stormed out to a 12-4 lead in game three as the Flyers committed five hitting errors. UD fought its way back into the game eventually, getting five straight kills from Robynne Green to go up 21-20. A Dayton service error and two kills apiece from Fonke and Lasater pushed SLU's lead out to 25-21. The Flyers tried to close on the Billikens again but McCloud posted two kills and Lasater added a kill as the Bills claimed the win to force game four.
The Flyers trailed at the beginning of game four but not for long as it got consecutive kills from Fletemier and Akerhielm to make it 3-3. They pushed the lead out to four points before SLU made its move, cutting into the lead with two of McCloud's game-high six kills for a 12-12 score. The teams tied at points 13 through 17 before Dayton went ahead for good. A Flyer kill and three Saint Louis errors gave UD a 23-19 edge. The Bills twice cut the lead to two but got no closer as Dayton held on for the 30-25 game and match victory.
Lasater led the Bills with 17 kills while Fonke added 10. McCloud turned in her second double-double of the weekend with 15 kills and 15 digs. Jamie-Lee Richards led the Flyers with 17 kills while Fletemier posted 12 and Akerhielm had 11.
