Saint Louis dominated Rhode Island 30-17 in each of the first two games and 30-22 in the third to improve to 12-5 overall and tally its first win in the Atlantic 10 this season. After securing a win in their first conference match, the Rams (8-11, 1-4 A-10) hit a dismal -.033 in their fourth straight conference loss.
Billiken senior Sutton Lasater led the Bills with 13 kills, followed by sophomore Bridget Fonke's seven. For the Rams, Amy Mellard led with nine kills.
The Billikens dominated Rhode Island 30-17 in game one. The Rams started with a two-point lead, but the Bills regained the advantage and went on a six-point run. Lasater and Fonke led the Bills with three kills each in the opening game. For the Rams, Caitlyn Welsh and Mellard lead with three kills each. SLU hit .303 while Rhode Island had nine kills and nine errors.
Game two started close until a kill by sophomore setter Whitney Roth started the Bills on a four-point run. Sally Warning helped the Billikens begin a 6-0 run with a kill. Midway through the game, the Rams tried to inch closer with a four-point run to cut it to 23-13, but they were stopped by a kill by Fonke, who led SLU with four kills in game two. Rhode Island's Mellard led the Rams with two kills. The Bills had one of their best games of the season by recording a .583 hitting percentage.
At the beginning of game three the teams traded points until the Bills answered with a five-point run to go up 11-7. The Rams battled throughout the game, but with two additional four-point runs by the Billikens, Rhode Island was not able to catch up and SLU won the match with a 30-22 game-three victory.
The Billikens play again at 1p.m on Sunday when they host Fordham at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center.
