Billikens Defeat Fordham 3-1

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis defeated Fordham 30-21, 26-30, 30-24, 3-24 in Atlantic 10 volleyball action to improve to 13-5 overall record and 2-2 in the conference. The Bills remain undefeated at 6-0 at the Bauman-Eberhardt Center this season. Fordham dropped to 9-15 overall and 2-4 in the A-10.

Sophomore Bridget Fonke tallied 17 kills and fellow sophomore Sammi McCloud posted 16 to lead the Billikens to a .324 hitting percentage for the match. Fordham freshmen Christi Griffiths and Kailee May chipped in 13 kills each for the Rams.

Game one started close with six ties until a kill from Fonke began a 6-0 run for the Bills. The Rams answered with a 5-0 run of their own and to close the gap to four points, but were stopped by a kill from sophomore Sally Warning. Fonke led SLU with five kills in the game, while Fordham had four players with four kills each.

Fordham responded in game two with a match-high .500 hitting percentage and took an early lead. The Bills answered Fordham's six-point advantage with a kill from Fonke to begin a 5-0 run and cut the deficit to one but Fordham pulled away for the win. Fordham's Griffiths had a game-high tying five kills as did SLU's Fonke and McCloud.

The Rams were able to contain the Bills at the beginning of game three until SLU took its first lead at 15-14 with a block by Warning and junior Lauren Christman. Both teams combined for 11 service errors, but the Bills held Fordham to a .143 hitting percentage to take game three.

The Billikens took the lead early in game four at 3-2 with a kill from sophomore Whitney Roth. Saint Louis led throughout the game but Fordham rallied towards the end with a 3-0 run to bring the score to 25-22, but were halted by a kill from Fonke. McCloud led SLU with five kills in the game.

The Billikens begin a four-match road trip starting Friday, October 12 at La Salle.
